In order to accelerate the coverage of Covid-19 vaccination for the elderly, Gebyar Vaksinasi Lansia (GVL) will be held throughout Indonesia for 2 weeks which will be held May 17-29, 2021, as well as a series of activities to commemorate National Elderly Day (HLUN) in 2021.
The implementation of the Elderly Vaccination Fairs is generally carried out in stages:
- Planning and Preparation, where advocacy and socialization to local governments and cross-programs and cross-related. In addition, coordination and logistics preparation are carried out.
- The implementation was carried out simultaneously throughout Indonesia on May 17-29, 2021 in commemoration of the National Elderly Day (HLUN).
- Evaluation is important in the implementation of a program, starting from monitoring/ensuring the readiness of vaccination logistics, determining elderly targets, mechanisms and systems for implementing vaccination in the regions, evaluating obstacles and solutions to overcome them, which are carried out as best practices for implementing the next program, as well as evaluating the achievements of vaccination and KIPI.
As an initial series of GVL activities, the Indonesian Ministry of Health held a Webinar "Socialization of Gebyar Vaksinasi Lansia (GVL)" with one of the agendas, namely a session on sharing best practice experiences in implementing Covid-19 vaccination in the elderly as well as socialization to the fostered areas of the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices which was held on May 7, 2021.
The socialization was attended by all Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices fostered areas namely Riau Islands Province, Bengkulu, D.I. Yogyakarta, Bali and North Kalimantan as well as cross-programs within the Ministry of Health. Experience sharing sessions to support the success of Covid-19 vaccination in the elderly were delivered by the Yogyakarta City Health Office, Surakarta City Health Office, and East Jakarta Health Office.
The elderly are part of a population at high risk of Covid-19 infection, with a high mortality rate if infected. Vaccination efforts need to be prioritized for this population, so as to prevent them from the risk of infection or a higher degree of severity if exposed. However, the vaccination rate among the elderly is still very low. Based on KPC PEN dashboard data as of 5 May 2021, the utilization of the first dose was 2,631,027 (12.21%) and the second dose was 1,632,357 (7.57%) at the national average.
The achievement of elderly vaccination in the scope of the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices' fostered areas is still below 30% on average. Yogyakarta Province leads the elderly vaccination coverage at 36% (first dose), followed by Bali, North Kalimantan, Riau Islands, and Bengkulu. However, when viewed in the national ranking of the implementation of elderly vaccination, most of the areas under the guidance of the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices are in the top 10 implementation of elderly vaccination. drg. Arianti Anaya, MKM as Plt. Director General of Pharmaceuticals on this occasion advised all regions under the Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals to provide support in the success of the Elderly Vaccination Gebyar activity, as well as coordinate with related stake holders and the Ministry of Health for the implementation of the Elderly Vaccination Gebyar so as to accelerate the implementation of vaccination and increase vaccination coverage in the fostered areas.
